CMEG Secures Mineral Exploration Licenses in Ethiopia, Strengthening Commitment to Sustainable Mining
Addis Ababa, Ethiopia
China Mining Energy Group (CMEG) is proud to announce that it has officially obtained two mineral exploration licenses in Ethiopia, marking a significant milestone in the company’s strategic expansion into East Africa’s growing mining sector.
The formal signing ceremony took place at Ministry Of Mines in Addis Ababa, where Mr. Saddam Raweh, General Manager of Overseas Operations and General Manager of CMEG Ethiopia, signed the agreements with H.E. Million Mathewos, State Minister of Mines of Ethiopia. The signing reflects CMEG’s commitment to developing Ethiopia’s mineral resources through responsible investment, advanced technology, and collaboration with local stakeholders. Also Mr. Ibraheem Berehe, Deputy General Manager of CMEG Ethiopia, joined the CMEG delegation to witness this important step forward in the company’s Ethiopian operations.
The two licensed areas secured will allow CMEG to begin comprehensive geological exploration programs aimed at unlocking Ethiopia’s vast mineral resources while adhering to the highest international standards of environmental stewardship and community engagement.
Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Saddam Raweh emphasized CMEG’s readiness to commence exploration activities:
“This is a proud moment for CMEG as we deepen our partnership with Ethiopia. These exploration licenses represent the start of a long-term investment in the country’s mineral sector. Our goal is to bring world-class exploration practices, generate local employment opportunities, and contribute to Ethiopia’s economic development.”
H.E. Million Mathewos welcomed CMEG’s investment and highlighted the government’s support for credible international partners working to responsibly develop Ethiopia’s mining sector.
This achievement follows CMEG’s earlier engagement with H.E. Eng. Habtamu Tegegne, Minister of Mines of Ethiopia, and H.E. Tefera Derbew, Ethiopia’s Ambassador to China, and its decision to establish a local branch office to manage operations within the country. With the licensing process complete, CMEG Ethiopia is now prepared to mobilize technical teams and initiate exploration work across its newly licensed areas.
CMEG remains committed to creating value through sustainable mining development, technology transfer, and community partnership. This milestone strengthens Ethiopia’s position as a competitive destination for foreign direct investment in mining and demonstrates CMEG’s confidence in the country’s long-term potential as a leading mineral producer in Africa.
